Sapporo Itinerary: 3 Nights, 4 Days from a Lake Toya Onsen to Otaru and Mt. Moiwa

Sapporo itinerary map for 4 days: Lake Toya, Sapporo, Otaru day trip and Mt. Moiwa
The route: fly into New Chitose, one night at Lake Toya, then two nights in Sapporo with an Otaru day trip and Mt. Moiwa.

Short answer: My Sapporo itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days: go straight from New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya for one night at a lakefront onsen resort, then spend two nights in Sapporo near the TV Tower. Use the middle day for an Otaru day trip and save the last morning for the view from Mt. Moiwa before flying home. It is an easy first trip to Hokkaido that mixes a lake, a city and a canal town.

Why this Sapporo itinerary works

Most Sapporo itineraries stay in the city the whole time. I wanted the first night to feel like a real holiday, so I went straight to Lake Toya for an onsen, a lake view and dinner at the hotel, then moved into Sapporo for two nights. Splitting the trip like this gives you both sides of Hokkaido: a quiet lake in the south and a city that is easy to walk and eat your way around, with Otaru close enough for a day trip.

This is my overview of the whole trip. I will write a separate, detailed log for each stop, starting with the Lake Toya resort. See all my Japan logs on the Japan page.

Sapporo itinerary, day by day

  • Day 1 – Lake Toya: land at New Chitose, go straight to Lake Toya, check in at the lakefront resort, onsen and dinner at the hotel.
  • Day 2 – Sapporo: breakfast by the lake, travel to Sapporo, check in near the TV Tower, dinner nearby and an evening walk.
  • Day 3 – Otaru: day trip by JR train, back to Sapporo in the evening.
  • Day 4 – Mt. Moiwa: the view over Sapporo, then the train to New Chitose and home.

Getting there and getting around

Fly into New Chitose Airport, head south to Lake Toya first, then into Sapporo, and fly home from New Chitose. Travel times below are approximate.

  • New Chitose → Lake Toya: roughly 2 hours. The resort runs a shuttle bus from the airport and JR Sapporo Station (reserve ahead; I paid ¥1,500 one way from the airport), or drive, or take a train to JR Toya Station and a bus to Toyako Onsen.
  • Lake Toya → Sapporo: the resort shuttle to JR Sapporo Station, a car, or the train from JR Toya Station.
  • Sapporo → Otaru: JR, about 32–40 minutes on the Rapid Airport or 45–50 minutes on a local train, ¥800 one way.
  • Sapporo → Mt. Moiwa: streetcar to Ropeway Iriguchi (about 25 minutes from Susukino), then a 5-minute walk or the free shuttle.
  • Sapporo → New Chitose: JR Rapid Airport, about 37 minutes at the fastest.
  • IC cards: Kitaca and Suica work on JR trains around Sapporo and Otaru. Check times on JR Hokkaido.

Day 1: Lake Toya (1 night)

Starting at Lake Toya turns the long arrival day into an easy, slow evening. It is the quiet half of this Sapporo itinerary.

Day 1 – Straight to the lake. I skipped the city and went directly from the airport to Lake Toya. My stay included both dinner and breakfast, so once I arrived I did not have to think about where to eat. Waking up to the lake outside the window was the perfect start to the trip. Read the full story, from the airport bus to the outdoor onsen in the snow, in my Lake Toya onsen log.

Where to stay: I stayed at The Lake View TOYA Nonokaze Resort (Google Maps), right on the shore of Lake Toya in Toyako Onsen. Choose a plan with dinner and breakfast included; the onsen town is small and eating at the hotel makes the evening easy.

Days 2–4: Sapporo (2 nights)

Sapporo is the city half of the trip: easy to walk, good for food, and a simple base for Otaru and Mt. Moiwa.

Day 2 – Arrive, dinner and an evening walk. After the trip from Lake Toya, I checked in, had dinner close to the hotel and then simply walked around the area. Around Odori Park and the TV Tower the streets are lively in the evening, and walking is the best way to get a feel for the city on your first night. Read the full day, from the bus out of Lake Toya to all you can eat crab and izakaya skewers, in my Sapporo Day 2 log.

Day 3 – Otaru day trip. I took the JR train to Otaru, a canal town on the coast, and came back to Sapporo in the evening. My full Otaru log is coming next in this series.

Day 4 – Mt. Moiwa and home. On the last day I went up Mt. Moiwa to see the whole of Sapporo spread out below, with the mountains and the sea beyond, then took the train to New Chitose. The ropeway is ¥1,400 round trip and the mini cable car to the summit ¥700 round trip; it opens at 10:30 (11:00 from December to March). Details on japan-guide.com.

Where to stay: I stayed at Cross Hotel Sapporo (Google Maps), where I could see Sapporo TV Tower from the hotel. It is about 6 minutes on foot to the TV Tower, 5 minutes to Odori Park and 9 minutes to Sapporo Station.

Practical tips for your Sapporo itinerary

  • Book the resort shuttle early: the Lake Toya shuttle from the airport and Sapporo Station needs a reservation.
  • Get an IC card: Kitaca or Suica makes the JR trains to Otaru and the airport easy.
  • Stay near Odori: the TV Tower area keeps everything walkable on the evenings in Sapporo.
  • Plan Mt. Moiwa around your flight: leave time for the streetcar, the ropeway and the 37-minute airport train.
  • Pack a layer: Hokkaido is cooler than the rest of Japan, and it is windier at the top of Mt. Moiwa.
